»My inspiration for this series of doll paintings was the
exhibition Black Dolls, collection Deborah Neff at the
Museum Maison Rouge in Paris in 2018, where historical
black dolls, which were created between 1840 and 1940,
were shown.
They were often sewn by Coloured nannies for the (white)
children in their care. Thus, each doll was unique.
The dolls say a lot about their time and about the society
of that time. Today they evoke new associations, on the
subject of refugees and migration, on questions of equality
in our society.
Maybe the series of doll compositions raises more questions
than it answers. And that's what it should do.«
