2005/2006 reiste Adam Frelin
über 15.000 Meilen quer durch die Vereinigten Staaten, um
Bäume zu photographieren, die durch
Autounfälle Schaden genommen hatten. Trees
Hit By Cars ist
das Dokument dieser Reise.
"When
I was young, my father would beat
the smaller trees in our
yard with a baseball bat. He took his cue from
the big oak at the
bend of our street that appeared
to grow stronger each time it was
hit by a car. As a child, I believed
that it was, in fact, the lives of
those drivers that made the oak
stronger, their life force absorbed
and collected by the tree on
impact. Each tree in this book has experienced at least one run-in with
a car. Some have had several.
Their whereabouts have been discovered
through police reports,
insurance records, local knowledge, and chance
encounters.
Through their scars they document vehicular accidents that
range
from the most minor of mishaps to multiple fatalities. But these
scars––superficial and disproportionate––are poor indicators of the
ordeals experienced by those who were unfortunate enough to have
created them. Unforgiving and seemingly impervious, a tree proves
to be
a formidable obstacle, concealing tragedy through scraped
trunks and broken bits of bark." (Adam Frelin, Introduction)
